I create jewelry that celebrates the functionality of form, the beauty of framework, and the celebration of structure.  With a affection for bridges, trusses, and the steel framework throughout our built environment – I create wearable jewelry that is inspired by architecture and engineering.

I see potential jewelry in almost everything that I see, but what takes my breath away is the beauty of our engineered and built environment.  The patterns of truss-work that allow human-made structures to cross vast expanses and soar to the sky inspire me endlessly.

To wear artwork inspired by these structures connects me to my city and the places that I live and visit.  I create jewelry for those who also see beauty in urban cities and human-made structures.

Creating with my own two hands and the translation of beauty around me into wearable works of art is the motivation for all of my work.

About Maija Brianne McKnight

Maija's (Latvian name, pronounced Maya) career has always been invested in art. Supporting artists, sharing her passion for art, managing creation of new public artwork, and working in museum education (Settle Art Museum and Tacoma Art Museum), all kept her completely indulged in art for years. It was during her phase of taking various classes that she found her own artistic talent: jewelry making. The moment she began jewelry making in 2009, she knew she had found an interest that would last. After taking a variety of advanced classes and endlessly practicing and learning the art of jewelry making, she set up her own studio and began making jewelry. Since then, her passion has not deteriorated at all but has found a direction: to create jewelry that is visually appealing but also lasting and strong enough to be worn for weeks straight without fear of damage. And that is precisely what Maija creates for Maija Brianne Designs.
